5 Signs Your Computer May Have a Virus (and What to Do Next)
These signs deserve a closer look, but do not prove that your computer has a virus. Slowdowns can have other causes, and strange messages may indicate an account issue rather than an infected computer.
1. Pop-ups that won't go away
Windows that appear on their own, especially ones saying your computer is infected or telling you to call a number, are a classic warning sign.
2. Your computer suddenly gets very slow
Every computer slows down with age, but a sudden change, such as taking minutes to open a page, can mean something is running in the background that should not be.
3. Your home page or search engine changed
If you open your browser and it looks different, or searches take you to websites you do not recognize, unwanted software may have been added.
4. Programs you did not install
New toolbars, icons, or programs you do not remember adding deserve a closer look.
5. Friends say they got strange messages from you
If family or friends receive emails or texts you never sent, your account may have been compromised.
What to do next
- Do not call any phone number shown in a pop-up.
- Do not pay anyone who contacts you out of the blue.
- Change your email password from a device you trust.
- Use your device’s built-in security tools or ask a trusted technician to check it. Avoid downloading a cleaner from a warning pop-up.
