Why Is My Computer So Slow? 5 Safe Things to Try

Start with these simple steps before you call anyone.

1. Restart it

It sounds too simple, but a full restart (not just closing the lid) clears many small problems.

2. Close what you are not using

Too many open programs and browser tabs slow everything down. Close the ones you are finished with.

3. Check for updates

Updates fix problems and improve security. Open your device’s built-in Settings or System Settings to check for updates, rather than following a pop-up advertisement. Save your work, let updates finish, and restart when asked.

4. Keep some free space

If your storage is nearly full, the computer struggles. Before deleting anything, back up important files and photos. Use the built-in storage settings to see what takes up space; avoid deleting files you do not recognize.

5. Watch for unwanted software

If the slowness came on suddenly, along with pop-ups or a changed home page, see our guide on the signs of a computer virus.

For device-specific instructions, see Microsoft’s Windows support or Apple’s Mac support.

When to call for help

If these steps do not help, or you are not comfortable trying them, that is perfectly okay. A quick in-person or remote tune-up is often all it takes.
